My project isn't easy to show because it was a joint, more complex, project. Itzel and I decided to create a class/club involving law and Law Day. Law Day is an actual holiday but it's not widely celebrated or even known about. We used the idea that was originally used my the ABA, the American Bar Association, and built off of that. Our mentors, Glen and Diem, also helped us come up with more ideas and to try to implement it into our school community and then other schools. Our club/class will include lots of information and activities including: jury duty, mock trials, right and obligations depending on age, and even presentations from actual attorneys. Our project will, hopefully, live on past us and will take our whole senior year. We want to make sure that everyone wants to be involved by creating spirit weeks and activities leading up to the actual event that'll hopefully take place around May, because May 1st is the actual Law Day holiday. We have to thank the city attorney, Glen, for the base of our project idea because I know it's something he's been wanting to implement and being able to help him with that and enjoying what we're doing will make an outcome of a great project! The Internship Project page of my DP will explain further once the club is creating and hopefully running.
Spontaneous! - Throughout my internship I met lots of people who I will always remember and look up to. There was lots of advice, big and small, that I will remember forever as well as many qualities that I'd like to develop myself. One of the big ones would be to stay humble and make sure to be there for anyone who needs help no matter there status or yours. I find that in this office everyone is equal and that's something that not all workplaces have but should be very much implemented. Not only are they equal but everyone is like a family, making it so much better for anyone who interns here.
- My view of life continues to change everyday, especially the life that happens after high school. I go form dreading the coming of it to being so anxious and impatient. I don't really know what to expect but when I go into college I'll know that there will be lots more freedom than what we got during internship and I'll have to handle it but I also learned that it's not what you expect and you can't really ever expect what's going to happen next or how things will play out, you can just keep yourself on track. So yes my views have changed and they will continue to change until the time comes and I actually find out what happened. - This internship influenced my direction of life because being in an office full of lawyers made me want to know and even try more. I'll probably try to get more internships to really know what it's like because every office is different and there are many different branches of law to pick from. I still am not completely sure but this has helped me to see what sort of things I'd be dealing with and whether I want to deal with them or not. - I think the best skills I had coming in to this internship are my ability to type pretty fast and being able to speak up/speak publicly. I know that if I didn't have these things almost built into me that even the first week would've been extremely hard. I think High Tech is the main reason for my ability to speak up and really appreciate all the opportunities that I've gotten just by putting myself out there. Typing is something that I've always wanted to perfect because my dad said it would be a very important skill to have once I was older, and he was right. I took some keyboarding classes at my middle school that taught me the basics and ever since then I've been able to get faster and faster.
- The biggest skill that I've developed while being at my internship doesn't really have a name, it's the way that I work/receive work. We were often just asked to do things that were completely different than what we were working on before, but both, Itzel and I, completed everything that was assigned to us. Another huge skill is time management, I knew that this skill would grow because of the fact that I would have more freedom compared to what we get at school. At the beginning I wasn't expecting this amount of freedom while being here and then realized that I would have to be that one to keep up on my hours/schedule and lunch, everything was up to me. I think this gave me a huge heads up on college and I know that it'll be even more freedom to juggle but at least I'll have this small taste before actually taking on college. - Being an intern has taught me so many things, not all things that I could have learned in a classroom. I think that this is probably one of the best opportunities/experiences I have ever gotten. I really appreciate that High Tech makes this a requirement because I've heard many stories of people not liking their actual workplace after going through the money and school process. Without this experience I wouldn't know what my city is working on, what it's like to be a city attorney, or all the people that it takes to run an office. I think this is really going to help shape my future by helping me choose a career, I look forward to doing other internships soon as well. As of now I'me very comfortable at my internship with everyone I've met. Itzel and I have been told that we're the best interns from HTHCV and that it's like every year we get better, which made me really happy for the school and of course myself. I always wanted to leave an impression and am happy that I'm doing so, this being said, I do want to do more. I hope for them to remember the work and project I accomplish and not only that but be able to put a face to the hard work. I'm actually very sad at how fast this is all going, 2 weeks already flew by and I really don't want it to end. I plan on making the best out of these last two weeks and to keep worked harder and trying my best. One month was too short of a time but I'll make sure to keep the memories building.
So far I have loved working at my internship. I have been in between law and medicine for a while now and seem to still be stuck. I really enjoy being here but I know that I'll have to experience medicine before making a choice. I will say that this internship has caused me to really look more into law and actually look into a career more so than before. I would like to look into other branches in law before making any decisions. I do see that being an attorney can be very stressful and busy at times but I'm not very bothered by this because I like to keep busy. Another thing that I notice is that it's usually very quiet and I get a bit anxious for lunch or the end of the day when it's too quiet, but I have e been told that not all offices are the same and that there's actually a lot in which there's usually always noise, I'm still trying to decide which I would like better. Adding to this I think it's just where we're positioned because it's very open while the attorney's have actual offices, meaning they can be pretty loud and we would barely notice. I've always wanted to help people, which is why I'm between law and medicine, I know that I can make a change in these careers. I haven't seen much of actual face to face change but I do love how this office listens to the public, all of Chula Vista, and keeps them in mind. If I do end up choosing law I know that a big part of my choice will be because of this office and those who I met along the way teaching me little things about being in the workplace.
Honestly I am still trying to figure out what exactly to do as my internship project. Itzel, who is interning with me as well, and I have been thinking about ideas together on a possible project that we could present together. The office is very well ran and organized, meaning there is no need for huge changes or corrections, making it a little hard to leave something helpful and meaningful as a project from us to them. Glen Googins, city attorney and our second mentor, and Diem, our main mentor, seem to have an idea for which they have talked briefly to us on and we might me able to make a project out of. Nothing is final yet but I know that with a great plan and the support from both HTHCV and our mentors we can make this work, and not just work but make it amazing! I'm really looking forward to seeing this in it's final stage.
1. What exactly do you do to contribute to this organization?
2. When did you decide that you wanted to study law? 3. If you could chose one word to describe yourself what would it be and why? 4. How was the transition from high school to college, and then from college to law school. 5. What was the best and worst part about college/law school? 6. What branches of law were you interested in and what made you decide on this one? 7. How hard is it to maintain the balance between being a lawyer and being there for your family? 8. What do you hate doing, within your job, but you know it has to be done? 9. What do you like to live by whether its a quote, motto, following the footsteps of someone you look up to? 10. How do you think you'd be described as a high school student? *Questions vary between both mentors with slight changes depending on profession* Awesome!Right now I am just starting and do not actually have any questions. This first week has mostly been based around the Brown Act, for which there was a workshop on. It was a lot of work accompanied with a lot of fun. It was a bit difficult adapting to using Microsoft accessories instead of Google sites but I got used to it quick enough. I feel that I've already learned so much being here this first week and am really excited and happy to be able to have this experience. So far everything has been better than I could have imagined, what I love especially is how close knit everyone in this office is, it reminds me of HTHCV. Every conversation I've had so far seems to have advice and tips for the future, it's amazing not only having your mentor/s to talk to but a whole office full of people that are intellectual and happy to have you there. I hope to learn skills that will help me in school and the future. Anything fro computer skills and annotating to time management and how to be well prepared for different situations. I'm very happy with my internship and hope to make lots of memorable memories in the next three weeks to come.
So far I'm really enjoying my workplace. Everyone is amazingly nice and helpful, but not to the point where I'm getting treated like "just a high school student". The environment is very free and welcoming so there weren't any awkward moments, we just blended in seamlessly which I also really enjoyed. What strikes me most about actually working here is how quiet and focus everything is, everything seems very mature and real, but nothing I didn't expect. I feel that even though we are high school students, we are being tested as to what we can do because we obviously don't get the same work/workload as the college interns are given, but it's something to start off with and I know that we'll prove that we're capable of more soon enough. As of now, I'm very happy with what we're doing and am really excited to see what else we'll be doing and how we can help their days run smoother and be interns they'll remember. The only thing I'm worried about would be making sure everything works out with the project that we need to come up with by the end of internship, I have no idea what I'm going to do yet and I really would like to have plan soon so, if anything, that's what's on my mind. Other than that, I love my internship and hope everyday is as great as these past two have been.
